What is Eki Tai Ko?

Eki Tai Ko is my own personal philosophy in terms of martial arts.
Eki Tai Ko means "The drum of a train passing a station" or "flowing liquid steel".
I apply 1 central philosophy that makes Eki Tai Ko somewhat unique from several modern martial arts out there yet is similar to the 5 arts of which it is derived.

Philosophy: Train to win the Fight. Not to perfect the Art. Not to find the Way. Not to enlighten Oneself. Train diligently so that you may apply your knowledge and skills if ever need be not that you may look impressive or master what is written on the textbook. To understand something is great, to know how to actually use it for its purpose is another thing. Minimality and simplicity is key in fighting. Explosive controlled outbursts and sudden movements are the true Way of Fighting. The number of trophies you have, the size of your body, the amount of muscle you have, the amount of experience you have in whatever field....all of this does not matter. If what you have mastered is dryland swimming and I am a trainee in real swimming...I will beat you to the ground and keep you there!

Fundamentally, the Art of Eki Tai Ko means to move and react simultaneously with your opponent, and strike abruptly. Contact, attacking the attacker, rotation, angle advantage and correct use of your tools are all explored in Eki Tai Ko.

Eki Tai Ko takes my personal opinion as to what are the best elements of the 5 arts: (Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do, Musashi SwordFighting, Bo-Jutsu, Shaolin Arts) to create my style that suits myself.

You do not need to take what I may try to teach as the truth or correct way because each person has different skills, preferences or attitudes when it comes to fighting. But nevertheless you will learn or widen your knowledge through absorbing the teachings in my future posts.

Note: Posts may contradict one another because there has never been a perfect "style" created before and all that claim to be perfect are not. Just as I might change my mind as to what is most effective or useful, so will the style of Eki Tai Ko. Only the philosophy of the Art of Fighting remains true. However, change is not detrimental but good because it signifies progress and the maturation of one's understanding and competence.

"Move flowingly, like liquid...Hit hard, like steel"

Make your own equipment

So obviously in the world of martial arts, working out and weapon mastery there is a crazy amount of equipment that one would need to train in any one of these arts. This can range from books to clothes to weights to machines to bars to weapons to ropes or simply, a tree.

I myself, have a collection of weapons, a weight set, a 12kg kettlebell and skipping rope with a few martial art and weaponry texts as guides for my training yet I constantly struggle to acquire the equipment I need to train proficiently or sufficiently (eg. a heavy boxing bag, wall bag, martial arts wooden dummy, etc).

Yet, one must learn to be resourceful and make do with what they have. And so, for example, I have created my own striking plank with which I can adjust the padded area so that I may practice punches, kicks and all kinds of strikes on it, providing me with much-needed experience with striking against wood instead of simply the air.

So the next time you need weights....just buy 3L milk jugs or start lifting bricks or using your body (eg. lifting your leg to do bodyweight bicep curls) :)
The next time you need a wooden punching block, you could do what I did.
The next time you need a punchbag, fill up a bag/cushion with sand and hang it on the wall.
The next time you need boxing gloves, you could wear oven mitts with toilet paper wrapped hands.

Of course....if you can afford to buy whatever you need...you buy it, but if you're on a budget...improvise,

Another thing, learn to use your environment. Search for any nearby parks to see if they have monkey bars or pull-up bars. Surprisingly, many do.

The Start of a Journey

From a young age, I used to get into fights a lot....

At the age of 9, I started to become interested in Chinese Kungfu and swordplay...
At the age of 11, I started training in swordfighting and practice staff arts.
At the age of 12, I weighed 28kg...

At the age of 13, I started training in Japanese sword styles and Chinese Kungfu but weighed a nimble weight of 35kg.

Ignore the insanity of the pose/expression ^ :)

At the age of 14, I started training in Escrima, phillipino martial arts and became an avid practioner of swordfighting, collecting more and more swords. From a nimble weight of 28kg at the age of 12 I doubled weight to 56kg due to delving into the world of weight lifting and bodyweight strength training.

Early Days
Prime- forgot leg day XD
At the age of 15, I have started studying and reading books on martial arts and weapon mastery and training according to the texts...I have also decided that I would dedicate myself to the perfection and mastery of combat skills. Bruce Lee and Miyamoto Musashi have become my idols and I have delved into the world of Shaolin Martial Arts. Right now, I am adapting bojutsu, wing chun, jeet kune do, kenjutsu and shaolin martial arts to fit what suits me and create my own martial art philosophy: Eki Tai Ko.

My first time working out after a 4 month stop between Yr9 and Yr10.

My journey begins here...I hope you will join me. I will posting my thoughts on martial arts and what I have learnt as well as videos of my progress.
